The beekeeper of Wietzendorf is the emblem of the Honey Festival of the region (Heathland of Lüneburg). It was designed by the artist Claus Homfeld, who hailed from Bremen, and was shown for the first time at the 23rd Honey Festival on the 28th September in 1996. The expenses of 70,000 DM were made up of donations only. The beekeeper in his typical working-dress with a pipe, a hat and a safety mask keeps a traditional basket in his hands. Two more baskets were placed to the right of the statue. One of these shows a face that was meant to repulse evil spirits.
